No more empty words. No more empty promises. It’s time to ground sustainability communications.
These days, it’s buzzword mania in the sustainability scene as decision-makers grapple with the many challenges ahead of us. ‘Climate neutral’, ‘green economy’ and ‘net zero’ are classic examples of terms that are easily thrown around, yet have complex concepts and connotations behind them. Greta Thunberg’s iconic ‘blah, blah, blah’ speech on the climate crisis puts it plainly: yes, we need constructive dialogue to gain any headway. Of course we do. But decades of technical terms and lofty goals haven’t led to the deeper sustainability action the world desperately needs.
Here are three main reasons why lofty language and buzzwords don’t work and won’t inspire change:
1. It’s not relatable.
Discussing sustainability in hard-to-grasp technical terms means that true understanding is kept within the most powerful, educated and informed circles of society. Yes, these terms might mean something to these people — including the siloed worlds of corporations and governments — but they don’t really mean much to the average person who’s also being affected by the global sustainability crisis. Using unrelatable, non-human-centric language that doesn’t resonate won’t encourage the vast majority of us to act, as it simply fails to create a relevant, emotional connection with people’s daily existence.
2. It’s confusing.
When it comes to the actual meaning of buzzwords and the solutions they point to, confusion and ambiguities are rife. These buzzwords might sound good and offer a sense of urgency, but they don’t give a clear explanation of the issue at hand and what needs to happen to address it. This means that many of us are left confused as to what we can actually do to contribute to a more sustainable world.
3. People feel excluded.
South African eco role model and environmental educator Xoli Fuyani shared this ‘reality check’ reflection after attending COP26 in Glasgow:
“Many people felt excluded and left behind due to communication barriers. It was clear there was no care to detail on inclusion. Which is a clear indication that those who are more affected will always be left out.”
This means that those who are most impacted by the changing climate, water scarcity and biodiversity loss — to name but a few of our major and current sustainability challenges — often don’t have their voices heard or their experiences shared. This is a crucial missed opportunity to co-create a better future.
How to shift from empty words to inspire real change: Grounding the ‘blah, blah, blah’
Buzzwords however do have a time and place. They can raise and spread awareness, even if it’s based on a superficial understanding. While this does have its merit in getting key messages on sustainability issues out there, these buzzwords and the surrounding lofty language need to be grounded. They need to mature into inclusive and actionable wording, which motivates us humans to move beyond ‘business as usual’, so that everyone from governments to under-represented voices can be equipped with the knowledge, tools and representation needed to make positive changes that protect the planet.
So how can we do this and get the right sustainability messaging out there? How can we use these buzzwords to not only help us join the global conversations, but to lead the conversation and influence change?
1. Know your audience
Knowing who you are writing for and why is key to any communications success. This involves unpacking the characteristics of your target audience and getting under their skin to find out what makes them tick. Deep diving into what matters most to them and understanding how they consume content, through which channels and in what format, is key here. Only from this knowledge can key messages be built; messages which you want your target audience to not only hear, but also remember and act upon. Water Aid does a good job of this by utilising their impact data to capture the attention of a cross-section of their users and boost different types of involvement in such an important cause.
2. Tell a relevant impact story
Storytelling is key to building emotional and social connections with your audience. A key ingredient in storytelling is talking about both successes as well as challenges and stumbles and how these were overcome. This approach helps to humanise your voice, creating a deeper, more authentic resonance with your audience. Because, let’s face it, every story includes challenges.. The Dutch Environment Agency, PBL, unleashes the power of storytelling in their new nature-based solutions website that encourages governments to implement these solutions to sustainably manage and restore ecosystems.
3. Use clear language & imagery
Making complex terms relatable through stripping back jargon, and using clear language and imagery to kickstart the imagination, is essential to get your message across successfully. In a nutshell, reclaim the buzzwords by reframing their complexity and unpacking them in a way that makes sense to both your organisation and your target audiences. See how Dutch chocolate company Tony’s Chocolonely uses straight-up language and bold colours to take their brand to the next level.
4. Bring facts to the table, be transparent & don’t spin it
Honesty, accuracy and transparency are key to build believability and encourage action. Don’t bow to pressure to spin your information. Instead, be honest about the fact that we don’t have all the answers, or that there are bumps in the research or roll-out road. Check out the sustainability direction of Adidas and how they’re choosing brutal honesty in their communications when it comes to their supply chain.
5. Bring your information to life in creative & immersive ways
If you can bring your content alive with infographics, videos, animation, or even experiences, then do so. This not only ties in numbers one, two and three above; it’s also much more engaging. 6. Have a clear call to action
An audience that’s overwhelmed with complex information and decisions won’t act. Choose one clear, accessible and achievable action to ask your audience to take. Show people practical, simple daily actions they can take to make climate-conscious changes. Like buying organic. Travelling by train instead of plane. Making your pointers relatable and easy to action connects people emotionally and practically to sustainability challenges, inspiring real action. Dunnet Bay Distillers created an easy return of empties through the post, boosting change-making behaviour around recycling and closing the loop on packaging.
